Mawson's Huts in Antarctica Featured on Stamp
First Day of Issue: January 2, 2013 - French Southern and Antarctic Territories
The French Southern and Antarctic Territories has issued a postage stamp featuring Mawson's Huts at Commonwealth Bay in Antarctica.
In 1911, Australian explorer Sir Douglas Mawson began his Australasian Antarctic Expedition to explore the Antarctic continent immediately to the south of Australia. He landed at Cape Denison on Commonwealth Bay on January 8, 1912 and established his main camp which has become known as Mawson's Huts.
Today the huts are being restored by Mawson's Huts Foundation.
