Rare U.S. Landmass Antipodes Featured on
French Antarctic Stamps

First Day of Issue: January 2, 2013 - French Southern and Antarctic Territories

The French Southern and Antarctic Territories has issued a pair of postage stamps featuring artistic of Amsterdam Island and St. Paul Island.

Interestingly, Amsterdam and St. Paul Islands are two of only three land masses on Earth that are antipodes of the contiguous United States.

An antipode is any place on Earth that is diametrically opposite to a point on the other side.

If you were to try to dig to China from the U.S., you would most likely end up somewhere in the Indian Ocean, unless you were in the spot of one of the three antipodes that lead to a land mass such as these two islands.
