French Resistance Fighter Raphaël Elizé
Honored on Postage Stamp

First Day of Issue: February 18, 2013 - France

France has issued a new postage stamp honoring French resistance fighter Raphaël Elizé.

Raphaël Elizé was a successful mayor of Sable-sur-Sarthe, a small town south of Sarthe in 1929, during a time of rising intolerance and in a region deemed conservative. His success is all the more remarkable as he was a Socialist.

He was reappointed mayor in 1940 but was interrupted by the arrival of German troops. Denounced for his resistance activities, he died at the Buchenwald concentration camp.
