Netherlands Postage Stamp Honors Walcheren

First Day of Issue: February 25, 2013 - Netherlands

The Netherlands has issued a new postage stamp honoring Walcheren as part of their Beautiful Netherlands series.

Walcheren is a former island in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands at the mouth of the Scheldt estuary. Polders and a dam across the Oosterschelde have connected it to the (former) island of Zuid-Beveland, which in turn has been connected to the North Brabant mainland.

Until 2011, the “Beautiful Netherlands” series was dedicated to cities. For 2012 and 2013 PostNL has opted for a new coherent thematic approach and has chosen historic country houses and regional dress respectively.

This stamp features an open embroidered underbonnet with a so-called ‘langettemuts’ over it (‘langet’ is the name for a white cotton band with ribs woven into it).
