Mattia Preti Honored on Malta Postage Stamps

First Day of Issue: February 23, 2013 - Malta

Malta has issued a new miniature sheet with two postage stamps celebrating the 400th birthday of Mattia Preti.

Arguably one of the most celebrated artists who worked in Malta during the Baroque era, Mattia Preti was born in Calabria, Italy, in 1613. Alongside his brother Gregorio, he worked extensively across Italy and also painted fresco cycles in churches in Rome and Venice.

The miniature sheet bearing two stamps portrays The Baptism of Christ; Painted early on during Preti's stay in Malta, this work ranks as one of his finest from that era and a Self-Portrait; was painted in the 1670s for his family chapel at the church of the nobility in St. Domenico di Taverna.
