Australia Stamps Celebrate Canberra Centenary

First Day of Issue: March 5, 2013 - Australia

Australia has issued a pair of postage stamps celebrating the 100th anniversary of Canberra.

Canberra was selected as Australia's capital in 1908 with the official foundation ceremony occurring on 12 March 1913. Following an international competition for the city's design, plans by Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin were chosen as the blueprint for the city we now know.

Australia's Parliament House and the National Portrait Gallery are featured on the stamps with the original architectural plan for the city by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin incorporated into the stamp designs.
