Vatican City Stamps Honor Pope Francis

First Day of Issue: May 2, 2013 - Vatican City

Vatican City has issued a set of four new postage stamps honoring the beginning of the pontificate of Pope Francis. The stamps are part of a joint issue with Italy.

On 13 March 2013 Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected as the Bishop of Rome. As such, he is the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church. He chose the papal name Francis in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi.
